With November being the month of Thanksgiving, I’d like to use my space in the newsletter to express my gratitude and thanks for just a few of my wonderful blessings.
First of all, I’m so thankful for the fortune to live in this free country. I love America and I’m so grateful for the sacrifice of the many men and women who willingly serve, or have served, to preserve our many freedoms. Thank you.
I’m thankful to live in Blackfoot. And although I can think of a few places that have a much more favorable climate (especially where winter is concerned) nowhere comes close to here as a place to raise my family and to call “home”.
I’m grateful for our public leaders. For the time they spend on our behalf. Thank you.
I’m grateful for our amazing law enforcement. For their commitment to keeping us safe. Thank you.
I’m grateful for our firemen and EMTs. Heaven forbid that I should ever need their services but I know they’ll be there if I do. Thank you. And I’m grateful for our great schools. My kids love their teachers, past and present. For helping my wife and I mold their young characters, I thank you. But most of all I’m grateful for the many wonderful people who call Blackfoot home. I’m grateful for your kindness, for your friendships and for making our community such a great place to live. Thank you so much.

Executive Director's Letter
I think sometimes we get too focused on what’s wrong in our world rather than what’s right. The month of October was a great month to notice the good things going on and what’s really right with our community and the people that live here. I’m really proud about what’s happening in Blackfoot, and I hope we do our best to keep improving and making this a great place to live.
The Blackfoot and Snake River soccer teams brought it all to the table and did a great job representing our community at the State level. Coming home with two State Championships in soccer is impressive, but what was even more impressive was the way these two teams left the cross-town rivalry out of it and supported each other as they both made their way to the top spots. Congratulations to these boys, their coaches, and all those who have had an influence on them to be their best and represent their schools and communities in such a positive way.
Then I had the chance to witness the Blackfoot varsity football team win the District Championship and accept the trophy with excitement and class. After a hard fought battle, both teams extended handshakes and pats on the back. It’s always more fun to win, but winning and losing gracefully is a skill and characteristic that is taught by good examples. I was really proud of both football teams and the parents and coaches that have taught them to be classy – win or lose.
The opening of Tommy Vaughn’s Grill was another big moment for Blackfoot. I’m sure in big cities a new restaurant opening is nothing to make note of, but when you’re from Blackfoot, a new restaurant is a big deal! I’ve had the chance to eat there, and if you haven’t been there yet, what are you waiting for? The food and atmosphere is a great enhancement for Blackfoot, and I think it’s going to be a great addition to Blackfoot’s economic development.
The Idaho State Journal held their Business and Achievement Awards in October, and our own Holly Kartchner of Blackfoot High School was named the winner in the Education, K-12 category. The whole event was inspiring, and the nominees were all very deserving to be recognized for their accomplishments. My three daughters that graduated from BHS all had Holly as their U.S. Government and Law teacher. They’ve been out of high school for several years, but they still bring up class discussions, debates and challenges that Holly gave them to help broaden their thinking and encourage them see things from another point of view. Her influence on them has made a difference in their lives and the lives of many BHS students. Thank you, Holly, for being that teacher who made a difference!
I’m really looking forward to the month of November and all the things we’re going to remember we’re thankful for…especially Thanksgiving Dinner! Have a great month, and keep up the good work, Blackfoot!

| Dennis Hatch DDS Spotlight for November |
Dr. Hatch opened his dental practice in Blackfoot over 15 years ago. Since he was raised in Blackfoot and his wife was from Star Valley, Wyoming, they knew it was the perfect place to raise their family. He and his wife Jana Lee are proud parents of 5 children and grandparents of 1½ grandchildren.
Dr. Hatch is continually learning and mastering the latest techniques in the dental professions today. He is currently taking many extensive courses in order to help his patients become healthier and receive the best care in dentistry. In order to stay up to date with the latest in dental procedures and technology, Dr. Hatch also built a new state of the art dental office in 2010. It is located at 790 N. Meridian. (Across from Jenson’s Grove). It features the best available equipment and technology. This allows him to provide a wide range of dental procedures and diagnostic tools. The décor is warm and inviting to make dental visits as pleasant as possible. He built his practice with the vision of excellence in dentistry.
He is the only dentist in the Blackfoot area that utilizes the technology of CEREC. CEREC is a revolutionary system that enables the dentist to design, fabricate and fit a new crown, veneer, onlay or inlay in a single visit, a procedure that would normally take at least two weeks and require multiple visits. For this reason, patients come from a large area to take advantage of this time saving and high quality procedure. Dr. Hatch’s level of expertise has resulted in him being invited to mentor and train dentists from all over the world on this technology.
Dr. Dennis Hatch is also proud to be the only general dentist in Blackfoot to have installed a GALILEO Cone Beam 3D x-ray for the benefit of both his patients and those of any dentist who desires it for his/her patients. GALILEO is a cone beam x-ray that brings in the 3rd dimension. It is called a 3D x-ray and is a CAT scan for the face and head. It allows dentists to see all the way around a tooth or other area of the head. It provides much more detailed and accurate information to the dentist. GALILEO provides imaging without distortion and gives a perfect cross sectional imaging. It has the best quality image and software package available and is the only complete implantology system. A single exposure (which uses less radiation than a full mouth series of x-rays) produces a basic panoramic view, a lateral skull view, and literally hundreds of other views. The images can be magnified, rotated in space, viewed from any angle, sliced and sectioned to improve visualization in 3D. GALILEO is the lowest dose cone beam x-ray in existence, at nearly 50% of the next lowest machine. The amount of radiation is about 3% of a basic hospital CAT scan and the area of exposure is limited. Dr. Hatch is preparing to integrate his CEREC and GALILEO systems. This allows for very precise implant placement to replace missing or failing teeth. When a CEREC picture is integrated with GALILEO, both bone and soft tissue gums are superimposed on each other. This allows a better diagnosis, better treatment planning and better dentistry.
Dr. Hatch has selected the best dental team in order to give his patients the best in dental care. Heather Thomason RDH and Jessica Seamons RDH are his Dental Hygienists. They both received their degrees from Idaho State University. Jennifer Hansen and Rachel Bennett are his Certified Dental Assistants. Angelica Madrigal and Shelli VanOrden manage the business office. They work together to make going to the dentist a positive experience. Dr. Hatch and his team are in the business of saving teeth, re-establishing their function and perfecting glowing smiles. Sacrifice is the act of giving up something you value in behalf of someone else. And perhaps no greater group has sacrificed so much over the history of our great nation than our men and women in uniform. They give of their time, their talents and in some cases, even their lives. That is why we celebrate Veterans Day; to allow us to honor the men and women in uniform who have sacrificed so much to give us the freedoms we deserve. The Bingham Health Care Foundation is proud and honored to sponsor “Red White and the Blue,” on Saturday, November 12, a day of tribute to veterans in our area.
We hope you will take the time to join us for this special occasion in Pocatello, which will feature a special procession of veteran honorees, military posting of colors, a canteen-style “stage-door” production featuring musical entertainment and military art, and a fundraising dinner in the evening which will honor special guests and local veterans.
Although we cannot repay our veterans for the sacrifices they have made on our behalf, we can do our part to give back. The proceeds from this event will go to assist local veteran groups as well as funding medical treatment for veterans at the Healing and Hyperbaric Therapy Center in Pocatello. McManus Comedy to be Performed in Blackfoot
On Thursday, November 3 at 7:30 pm, The Blackfoot Performing Arts Center will present the first of all the McManus Comedies, A Fine and Pleasant Misery, by Patrick F.McManus, starring Tim Behrens.
McManus is one of the most popular humor writers in the country. His 23 titles have sold more than 6 million copies, and five of his collections of short humor have made the top 10 of the NY Times Bestseller’s list. In 1992, McManus, already recognized as one of America’s funniest humor writers, wondered if his stories about growing up in rural Idaho might work on the stage.
The McManus comedies are family friendly, hilarious stories about growing up in rural America. The result has been described by one reviewer as “Behrens doing McManus is like a cross between Mark Twain and Bill Cosby.” The key to the success of Pat’s writing–and Behrens’ acting–lies in activating the imagination of the audience. The one-man show, A Fine and Pleasant Misery, introduces 12 zany McManus characters, from Rancid Crabtree to daft old Mrs.Swisher, from Strange the Dog, to a deer on a bicycle and just enough detail to connect the viewer to each misadventure. The audience fills in the blanks, and makes each story its own. The Spokesman Review once worried that “paramedics would have to be called in people were laughing so hard.”

Autumn Tips To Make Winter In Your Home Less Scary.
*Clean out the rain gutters and downspouts. Keep a snow rake handy to prevent ice dams during the winter which can cause water damage inside the home.
*Inspect your roof for damaged or missing shingles and replace as needed.
*Inspect all water hoses for washing machines, icemakers, dishwashers, sinks and garbage disposals and replace as necessary. There should be no bubbles in the hose or indication it is separating. Rubber hoses should be no more than 5 years old, and the woven metal hoses should not be older than 10 years. If you do not know how old they are, make this the year you replace them.
*Check hot water heaters for leaks and corrosion. Rust is a sign of pending tank failure.
*Check windows for tight seals. Replace the caulk as necessary. Open and air out the house whenever possible.
*Clean out chimneys and change furnace filters.
*Change batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. It may be wise to have them hard wired so that if one goes off, they all do.
*Keep ice melt/sand and shovels accessible for sidewalks and driveways.
*Drain sprinkler systems to keep them from freezing.
*Make sure outside water hoses are disconnected from spigots. Cover outside faucets with insulator caps.
Getting Your Vehicles Ready.
*Have fluid levels and tire pressure checked.
*Have a winter emergency kit in your car – include a shovel, flashlight, flares, tire chains, blanket, tow rope, small phone book, first aid kit, cat litter, drinking water and candy.
*Make sure your tires are in good condition and suited for the winter roads. Keep tire chains/cables in your vehicle.
*Make sure your current insurance cards are in all of your vehicles and that you have the phone numbers to your insurance company to turn in a claim.
*Winterize summer toys as recommended by the manufacturer: RV’s, campers, boats, motorcycles, jet skis, etc.
Prevent the Horror of Frozen Pipes
*Open the cabinets under the kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow heat to circulate around water pipes.
*Let faucets drip. Moving water freezes slower than still water.
*Insulate pipes in your home’s crawl space or attic. Pre-cut foam insulation is inexpensive and easy to install.
*Insulate your outdoor water meter box and be sure the lid is on tight.
*Maintain heat in your home at a comfortable level, even if you will be away from home.

Why you can’t believe everything you hear about supplements:
Many people ask why there is so much conflicting information in the media about supplementation. It is all so confusing. What is a person to believe? Some experts have their biases and like to hype any study that suits their bias. Many food supplement companies make inflated claims for their products based on very skimpy evidence. Similarly, skeptics of food supplements jump on every negative study even if most studies show a clear benefit. Did you hear the breaking news last week---that multivitamins may shorten your life? “This study is a classic example of scientific reductionism being used to fulfill a particular need. In this case, its supplement bashing, a well-known preoccupation of Big Pharmacy and an approach that appears to be central to the protection of Big Pharma’s profit margins. Multivitamin can mean many different things. Were they high quality? Were the ingredients synthetic or natural? How much of each nutrient was taken? Were they really taken at all? How good is anyone’s memory in describing what took place over many years? One would assume that the women’s diets fluctuated greatly over the same period: when self-reporting only 3 times in 19 years, there is a great deal of information one would naturally leave out even if some of it was accurate. No analysis was done on the effect of supplements on the women’s overall health, nor of their effect on women of other ages. I would call this junk science.
Diet, exercise and supplementation are all equally important for achieving optimum health. For example on study showed that lifestyles that involved in high fiber intake, adequate calcium intake, adequate B vitamin intake, low fat, weight control and exercise substantially decreased the risk of colon cancer, but that none of these variables alone could be shown to have a significant effect.
I would like to point out that the modern scientific method is often ill equipped to evaluate the benefits of food supplements. The scientific method works best when you can analyze a single variable over a short period of time. Nutrients are important in preventing disease, not in treating it.

Until the Whole World Hears
Fall is a season of colors – from the leaves on the trees to flags on the tailgates at football games. Fall is also a great time to refocus on health and fitness.
ALL CALORIES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL
For years we’ve been told that healthy weight loss is as simple as taking in fewer calories than you expend. After all, a calorie is a calorie, right? Wrong.
Energy density refers to the number of calories, whereas nutrient density refers to the amount of nutrients in a certain amount of food. Dieters might be tempted to reach for today’s popular packaged low-calorie snacks. The problem, according to experts, is that despite being low in calories, processed foods usually have fewer vitamins, minerals and antioxidants the body needs to operate at its peak. A large apple might have the same number of calories as a bag of low-fat pretzels. But reaching for the apple means you also get more vitamins, antioxidants and fiber.
Recent research shows that optimal health (and weight loss) is better achieved through more nutritious food, not just fewer calories. A study by Harvard researchers found that food quality (nutrients), not just quantity (calories) contributed to weight loss. Those who consumed foods with higher nutrient density such as vegetables and whole grains, had healthier body weights than those who consumed more processed foods and beverages.
The Price of Healthy Weight
Despite what we know about so-called “empty” calories, most Americans continue to consume them. Part of the reason could be that foods with a higher nutrient density are much more expensive than foods with no nutrition. A University of Washington study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that energy-dense foods cost an average of $1.76 per 1,000 calories, while nutrient-dense foods cost $18.16 for the same number of calories. Optimal nutrition comes at a higher cost. But the health benefits are worth the price.
Be Satisfied. Lose Weight.
Satiety is a major factor in achieving weight loss. According to Dr. Barbara Rolls, Director of the Laboratory for the Study of Human Ingestive Behavior at Penn State University, people feel full because of the volume of food eaten, not because of the number of calories. In this respect, eating foods with high water and fiber content such as fruits and vegetables can help you lose weight.
Superfoods for Simple Weight Loss
Avocadoes, pomegranates and cinnamon are so-called “superfoods” that have gained recent attention as science uncovers nutrients working synergistically for better health results. Plant-based proteins are powerful superfoods because they satiate hunger while providing added nutrients, all without any cholesterol or high levels of saturated fats.
For example, soy and many varieties of nuts are considered superfoods because of their many nutritional benefits. Researchers at Iowa State University discovered two additional properties of soy that boost weight loss beyond simply cutting calories. The Iowa State study showed that consuming soy protein rich in isoflavones decreases fat deposition (storage) while increasing muscle mass.
In a Swedish study published by the Department of Medical and Health Sciences, researchers at Linkoping University fed test subjects 20 extra daily calories worth of candy or peanuts for each half pound of body weight. After two weeks, they found that the candy snackers gained three times as much weight as the peanut snackers, even though the number of calories consumed was the same.

The Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce is proud to honor nine individuals from the Blackfoot City Police, Blackfoot Fire Department and the Bingham County Sheriff’s for their commitment and dedication to protect and serve our community.
We appreciate all of the officers, firefighters, EMTs and emergency personnel, and are proud to be able to highlight those selected by their superiors.
We would also like to thank those who sponsored these nine individuals. The sponsorship funds were used to purchase a beautiful engraved pen and pencil set for each officer and a delicious meal of prime rib and potatoes provided by Fort Hall Catering.
